Coliseum Street Elementary
Cool Things Happening
In 2023, LULA teens began to curate programs for Coliseum students which bring unique learning opportunities for them to experience in addition to the great education they are receiving from their teachers. Kylie Jones and Kate Whitely started off the year with a Sports Clinic that they offered to students after school. Jake Smith and Xander Garrett brought an Art Academy to Coliseum in the mornings and Kiera Wood and Channing Pauley have started a Science Lab that takes place after school. Each program lasts from six to eight weeks and allows students to dive deeper in to areas that they love and enjoy!
Last Summer, LULA teens went to work refurbishing the gardening boxes/areas so the kids could use them to grow plants to enhance their science curriculum! To date, the teachers and students are on their second planting taking care of their growing cilantro and lettuce each morning!
Summer 2020 - The Beginning
In August, 2020, we provided 225 students in 10 classrooms with school supplies to begin their academic year online. This was a unique situation that required unique solutions. Based on their experiences during the Spring of 2020, our teachers requested crates for each student to store their school supplies in while learning at home.
Along with basic back to school needs, like pencils, markers and writing notebooks, they requested small dry erase boards to see the students work more clearly online. In addition, they requested jump ropes so students could exercise more easily at home. We will continue to help Coliseum Elementary as they continue to pivot to best meet the needs of their students.
The Teams meet regularly to strategize on how best to fundraise for Coliseum and the best way to make an impact at this school.
We asked the teachers to provide us with a wishlist of things they'd like for their classroom, school and students. The overwhelming request was for new laptops for the educators. Working remotely made them very dependent on their technology and slower, inoperable laptops made that task more challenging than it should have be.
Level UP LA was able to help Coliseum Street Elementary with the purchase of new laptops for each of their teachers.
As they got back in to their classrooms, we began supplying a printer for each classroom so teachers could easily print close by, saving much needed time that then goes to their students.
Back to School
Each Summer before Coliseum goes back to school, Level Up LA asked its' teachers what materials they need to make the beginning of school go as smooth as possible for the students. LULA teams get together and pack the supplies and deliver them to the school so they are ready for the start of another great year!
Each month, the LULA Teams organize a farmer's market stand to help raise money for the Level Up Los Angeles. They meet and greet neighbors from the community in the farmer's market for about 6 hours selling tote bags and spreading the word of Level Up LA. Last year they raised over $2000 and had a great time explaining what their goals are and how they are hoping to make an impact in LA Schools.
Something Special for the Holidays
LULA Teens got together over the weekend to pack over 200 Holiday Bags for students!
End of the Year Celebration!
To celebrate the end to a great but challenging year we decided to bring the party to Coliseum. We had fun with limbo and eating cold popsicles. We all had loads of fun and we can't wait for another great year. This summer we created a plan to keep the kids engaged with school while being able to enjoy their summer by getting them educational but fun books to read for their classes. We are very excited to continue working with the teachers of Coliseum through the summer and years to come!
